Ryan Giggs believes that Toby Alderweireld is the best defender in the Premier League following his sparkling displays for Tottenham this season.

The Belgium international has been a regular fixture in the Spurs team this season and has made 24 Premier League starts for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

The 28-year-old’s solid displays at the back have helped Tottenham keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea as Spurs look to catch the Blues before the season is out.

And former Manchester United star Giggs has explained just why he is such a big fan of the centre-back.

Placing him in his Premier League team of the season, Giggs told The Telegraph: “He is the best centre-back in the league when it comes to defending alone. Spurs have conceded fewer goals than any other team in the league.”

Alderweireld will be hoping to feature for Tottenham when the Lilywhites return to FA Cup action next weekend with a crunch clash against Chelsea at Wembley in the semi-finals.

Spurs are currently second in the Premier League table as they look to better their third-placed finish last term.
