Jose Mourinho has insisted that Marcos Rojo’s decision to eat a banana during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Rostov in the Champions League on Thursday night was no laughing matter.
The Manchester United defender was pictured eating the fruit after requesting it from the bench midway through the game at Old Trafford.
The incident was inevitably picked up on social media as Rojo boosted his energy levels during the game.
But the Red Devils boss insisted that it was not something to be laughing about after the game.
Speaking to BT Sport, Mourinho said: “I don’t know if you were tired at any time in your life. I’ve been tired many times and I know when the body is in its limits and needing anything.
“The player asked for a banana and a banana it was.
“But it’s not to laugh [about] at all. It’s to respect that the players, in their limits, give absolutely everything.”
Juan Mata scored the only goal of the game in the second half at Old Trafford as the Red Devils secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Manchester United will now turn their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their home clash against Middlesbrough on Sunday afternoon.
The Europa League quarter-final draw takes place in Nyon on Friday afternoon.
