Paul Merson has warned Arsene Wenger that Arsenal will have to spend around £200m on signing five or six new players to strengthen his squad this summer.
The Gunners boss has come under pressure in recent weeks after back-to-back losses to top-four rivals Chelsea and Liverpool on the road in the Premier League over the past month.
Arsenal lost 10-2 on aggregate to German giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week as the north London side fell at the last-16 hurdle for the seventh successive season.
The north London side haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira helped to guide the Gunners to an unbeaten season.
Wenger’s side are currently 16 points adrift of leaders Chelsea and are five points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the hunt to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
Speaking to Sky Sports about the signings that Arsenal need to close the gap between themselves and Chelsea, former Gunners midfielder Merson said:
“Mentality is the biggest thing they need to alter, which they won’t be able to do without making a lot of changes.
“They need a goalkeeper, a top central-defender, a central-midfielder and a quality centre-forward. Arsenal don’t have a spine in them at all.
“You look at the team who are going to in the league, Chelsea, they’ve got a world-class goalkeeper, top defenders, an unbelievable midfielder in N’Golo Kante, then Eden Hazard and Diego Costa who they can rely on for goals.”
Merson added: “It’s what you get for your money. Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala both cost over £30m, which shows you how few top class centre-backs there are around. They need about five or six players, which is about £200m in this day and age.”
