Ander Herrera has warned his Manchester United team-mates that they are set for one of their most important games of the season when they take on FC Rostov in the Europa league on Thursday night.
The Red Devils head into the game looking to bounce back to winning ways after the disappointment of their 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup on Monday night.
Herrera was sent off in the first half of that game but could be in line to feature against Rostov because his suspension will only apply to domestic affairs.
With Manchester United currently in sixth place in the Premier League table, the Red Devils know that winning the Europa League this season could present them with their best chance of winning qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
And Herrera has talked up the importance of Thursday night’s clash with the Russian side at Old Trafford, with Manchester United having taken a 1-1 draw from last week’s away leg.
Herrera told El Pais: “It is the most important match we have played so far [against Rostov] along with the EFL Cup final against Southampton. We must be realistic.
“In the Premier League, we are not in the top four places that qualify for the Champions League.
“Therefore, this competition is key because it may be our best chance of playing in the Champions League next season.”
