Jose Mourinho has hit out at Paul Pogba’s critics, insisting that the Manchester United midfielder deserves more respect.
It has been something of a mixed start to life back at Old Trafford for the French midfielder after he returned to the Premier League club from Juventus for a world-record transfer fee last season.
Pogba has made 40 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils this season and will be expecting to feature when Manchester United take on FC Rostov in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The midfielder, who turned 24 on Wednesday, has struggled to live up to his huge price-tag so far this season.
But Mourinho insists that the player is paying no attention to the comments heading his way as he focuses on improving on the pitch.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Wednesday at Carrington, Mourinho said: “I feel that the world is losing values and I am scared about the level of envy coming in.
“It is not Paul’s Fault that he gets 10 times the money some players did in the past.
“It is not his fault that some pundits are in real trouble with their lives and need every coin to survive, while Paul is a multi-millionaire. I think Paul deserves respect, I think his family deserve respect.
“He is from a normal working family, a family with three boys, and I am sure they needed a lot of food on their table each day because they are all giants, so their mum and dad must have had to work hard for many, many years to bring them up.
“This is a kid that came to Manchester as a teenager, who fought for his career here and was not afraid to move to another country and look for better conditions. Paul reached the top and nobody gave him anything. I am really worried about the way things are going with previous generations. Envy is everywhere.”
Manchester United head into their clash with Rostov on the back of their 1-1 draw in Russia last week.
