Arsenal need to sell five or six players before Arsene Wenger can consider making some statement signings in the summer, according to Charlie Nicholas.
The Gunners have endured a tough couple of weeks in the Champions League and the Premier League to leave Wenger in a precarious position at the north London club.
The Arsenal manager signed five players in last summer’s transfer window, including £33m midfielder Granit Xhaka and £35m defender Shkodran Mustafi.
The north London side have lost back-to-back Premier League games against top-four rivals Chelsea and Liverpool on the road.
Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League last week following a 10-2 aggregate loss to Bundesliga holders Bayern Munich at The Emirates last week.
Speaking to Sky Sports about what Arsenal must do to overhaul their squad in the summer transfer window, Nicholas said:
“Arsenal are caught in a catch 22 with the Wenger situation, plus we still don’t know what’s going to happen with Sanchez and Ozil. They have to get these big things sorted before they can do anything.
“I’d like to see five or six sold and then go in after some Statement Signings. I would sell David Ospina and bring in Joe Hart to get a bit of aggressive British attitude back in the side and then sort out the midfield by getting rid of Francis Coquelin and, if Bayern are as interested as I read, try to recoup the money spent on Granit Xhaka.”
