Paul Merson states prediction for Man City v Tottenham

Paul Merson believes Manchester City can kick-start their title bid with victory over in-form Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Citizens suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss to Everton at Goodison Park last weekend after goals from Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas, Tom Davies and Ademela Lookman on the blue half of Merseyside.

Pep Guardiola’s side dropped out of the top four following their resounding defeat after Tottenham were 4-0 winners against West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in second place in the Premier League table and their run of six successive top-flight wins have left the Lilywhites a mere seven points behind leaders Chelsea.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the top-five clash at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening, ex-Arsenal man Merson backed Manchester City to upset the form book and beat Spurs.

“Everybody is telling me Tottenham can win the league but if Man City beat them then they are level on points with Mauricio Pochettino’s side. It’s a must-win game for City,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“If Pep Guardiola can get a win I think his side are back to being top four material. If they lose though I think they can wave goodbye to the top four. Defeat would knock the stuffing out of them and I don’t think these players are up for a top four battle. It’s a big, big football match for City. For me, it’s cometh the hour cometh the man. Pep’s got to put a side out that will produce and win this match and I’m backing him to do it.”

Tottenham finished in third place ahead of Manchester City last season but 11 points adrift of eventual Premier League champions Leicester City.
