Ian Wright has hailed the commitment of Phil Jones after the Manchester United defender’s recent resurgence under Jose Mourinho.
The England international has seized his chance to secure a place in Mourinho’s starting line-up following Chris Smalling’s injury and Eric Bailly’s departure for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Jones has been partnering Marcos Rojo at centre-half over the past month or so to help Manchester United piece together a nine-game winning run before a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old centre-half has started nine of their last 11 games in all competitions to highlight his importance to Mourinho.
Speaking to BBC Sport’s 606 podcast after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford, Wright delivered a glowing verdict on Mourinho’s defence – and in particular, Jones.
“There is a natural balance. There is a right footer and a left footer. Phil Jones would go threw a Brick Wall for Manchester United,” Wright said.
