Mesut Ozil explains why he failed to perform for Arsenal at Man City

Mesut Ozil has revealed that the reason he struggled to perform for Arsenal against Manchester City and Everton before Christmas was due to the Gunners’ all-round performances.

The Germany playmaker came in for plenty of criticism following the back to back defeats in the Premier League in December as the north London side suffered a serious blow to their title hopes.

Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Everton at Goodison Park, before once again squandering a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 to Manchester City just days later.

Ozil was criticised for failing to have much impact on the game as the Gunners struggled to click into gear against their Premier League opponents.

However, Ozil feels that he struggled because of Arsenal’s lack of possession in both games.

Ozil is quoted as saying by Metro: “The expectations for me are raised each year.

“If I have one bad game after 10 good ones, there’s immediate criticism.

“We didn’t have much more than 20 per cent of the ball and as a team couldn’t perform, so I couldn’t play my game.”
