Jamie Carragher: What worried me about this Liverpool defender

Jamie Carragher says it was worrying to see Dejan Lovren to lose his composure during Liverpool’s 4-3 loss to Bournemouth last weekend.

The Merseyside outfit conceded three times in the final 16 minutes as Liverpool managed to relinquish a 3-1 lead to lose to Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side for the first time in the club’s history.

Lovren partnered Brazil midfielder Lucas Leiva at centre-half in the absence of Jurgen Klopp’s summer signing Joel Matip due to injury as on-loan Chelsea defender Nathan Ake netted an added-time winner.

The Croatia international has shown signs of improvement alongside Cameroon international at the heart of Klopp’s defence this season and the pair had managed to keep successive clean sheets before their trip to Bournemouth.

Former Liverpool Defender Carragher has admitted that it was alarming to see Lovren struggle against Bournemouth like he did under Brendan Rodgers for the first 18 months of his Reds career.

“A sign of a good player is how he can help lift the performances of those around him,” Carragher told The Daily Mail.

“Dejan Lovren has been more in control with a settled partner but he reverted to the form he showed after his arrival from Southampton without Matip to guide him. That was worrying.”
