Jamie Carragher: Why I don’t think Liverpool have a poor defence

Jamie Carragher has insisted that Liverpool don’t have a poor defence despite their second-half collapse in a 4-3 loss to Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Reds managed to squander 2-0 and 3-1 leads to lose to the Cherries for the first time after Jurgen Klopp’s side conceded three goals in the final 16 minutes at the Vitality Stadium.

Liverpool have now conceded 18 times in 14 Premier League games, which a worse defensive record than their title rivals Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City in the race to win the English top-flight crown.

However, Carragher highlighted that Liverpool goalkeeper hasn’t been called into action too many times in recent Premier League fixtures ahead of their trip to Bournemouth, suggesting that Klopp’s defence are doing something right.

“I don’t think Liverpool have a Poor Defence or are poor defensively,” Carragher told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show.

“If you’ve got a poor defence, you’re keeper is getting worked. It tells me Liverpool haven’t got a poor defence but the goalkeeper isn’t having to do anything.”

Liverpool are in third place in the Premier League table and four points behind leaders Chelsea after 14 games.
