Exploring Rail-Trails

Most people have heard of the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail, but do you know the name of your local rail-trail?

Currently, there’s a nationwide effort to build a network of Rail trails from former rail lines, helping to link corridors for people to engage in outdoor activities such as biking, hiking and walking. The idea is to create more walkable communities and car-free zones as rail trails offer a fabulous opportunity to get in shape and enjoy the outdoors. According to one organization, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, the goal is to connect communities so that by 2020 ninety percent of Americans will live within 3 miles of a Trail system.

Rail trails can range anywhere from short (5 miles) to long-distance (50+), and some in between. So if you’re looking for an alternative adventure to enjoy this summer, consider several of these options across the country: The Cape Cod Rail Trail, the Virginia Creeper Trail, or the Dutchess Rail Trail/Walkway Over the Hudson, or even Nebraska’s MoPac Trail, and if travelling further out west make sure to explore the OC&E Woods Line State Trail in Oregon.
