NYSS STATEN ISLAND COMP GALLERY

The people behind the New York Skate Series are doing a great job promoting rollerblading to the masses of ‘the greatest city in the world’, nad the competition held in State Island was no different. New York photographer Ryan Loewy was kind enough to supply us with an exclusive gallery of the comp, and blader poet Jay Greendyk provided us with a poem.

Another sip of the hemlock. It’d been over four years since I danced with the angels, but my feet were light as ever. Grounded only by the sweltering humid air of late July in New York, the first heats played out amongst faces from years past and fresh blood.

I did well. Check yourself, it’s hot. Catch your breath, am I still breathing? Still got it? My son’s watching. It’s the finals – just me and the young bucks now. After four hours in that kind of heat that makes you feel alive I’m ready to do what I’ve never done before, a dream buried a long time ago breaking ground.

Warming up, moments before, my heel gives out off the drop. Not good. Can’t put weight on it. The adrenaline and summer air will wear off soon. It’s now or never. Fuck it. Sweaty the drop the ledge – laced. Ecstatic and done. The rest rip and tear til the end and take their places. My brothers of a moment
