Wales Rugby History 1940-1955

Wales National Rugby Union Team represents Wales in international rugby union tournaments. Wales governing body Welsh Rugby Union (RU) was established in 1881. Wales played their first international match against England in 1881. Welsh rugby struggled between the first and second World Wars. The International Rugby Board (KIRBY) regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation and is ranked fourth in the world by the result of International Rugby Board (KIRBY) on 17th October 2011.

played a Red Cross charity match against England at Cardiff in 1940, which Wales lost 18-9. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering, without any discrimination based on nationality, race, sex, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. International Rugby closed for seven years, only four players crossed the gap of World War Two. Wales played a New Zealand Army team (the Kiwis) in 1946, which Wales lost 11-3.

The Five Nations Championship resumed in 1947, Wales lost their first official post-war international match against England by 9-6. But Wales defeated Scotland, France and Ireland in other matches of the Five Nations Championship and shared the title with England. Hadyn Tanner was captain in 12 of the 13 games played during that decade. Wales won their first Five Nations Grand Slam in 1950 since 1911. Wales achieved another Grand Slam since 1911 in 1952 securing their first Triple Crown with victory over Ireland in 1950.

Wales National Rugby Union Team welcomed the All Blacks and the Arms Park provided the setting for two magnificent home victories in 1953. Sid Judd scored tries for both club and country as first Cardiff beat the tourists 8-3 and three weeks later Wales followed suit, 13-8. In 1954, St Helens in Swansea (the Welsh international venue since 1885) hosted its last international and Cardiff Arms Park officially became the home of the Welsh team.
