Down 5-2 in the final six minutes of the third period, the New York Islanders scored four consecutive power-play goals in a span of 3:37 to take a 6-5 lead over the Red Wings; Detroit tied the game with 29 seconds remaining in regulation, however, Brock Nelson was not done. He cashed his third goal of the contest at 3:15 of overtime to power New York to victory. The Islanders improved to 27-23-6 (60 points) this season and claimed possession of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference standings grabbing the huge extra point.
Islanders’ forward Mathew Barzal collected five assists to Record his third five-point game of the season. Barzal became the second rookie in League history to record three games with at least five points in a single campaign – and first since Joe Malone in the NHL’s inaugural season.
Barzal – who leads all rookies in points with 16-42-58 in (56 GP)
became just the fifth player on any team in the past 20 years to record three or more games with at least five points in a single season.
