Toni Kroos scored a late winner as Real Madrid finally overcame Celta Vigo but their city rivals Atletico were left frustrated by a promoted side for the second successive week.

Real started the season with an impressive 3-0 win at Real Sociedad but they found life much harder in their first outing at the Bernabeu as Celta threatened to avenge last season’s 7-1 mauling there.

The hosts took a 60th-minute lead through Alvaro Morata but Celta drew level soon after thanks to Fabian Orellana’s brilliant shot from outside the area.

That looked set to earn Celta – who had conceded 17 goals in their previous four meetings with Real – an unexpected draw, but Kroos’ cool 20-yard finish with nine minutes left saw the European champions claim a 2-1 lead.

It was not such a good night for Atletico, though, as they dropped points against a top-flight newcomer once again after being held 0-0 at neighbours Leganes.

Atletico drew 1-1 at home with Alaves in their first match and despite creating virtually all the chances against Leganes, they could find no way past inspired home goalkeeper Jon Ander Serantes. Leganes now have four points from two games in their first-ever season at this level.

If Atletico are finding life difficult at present, it is nothing compared to another of Spain’s traditional heavyweights, with Valencia propping up the table after crashing to a second defeat.

After going down 4-2 at home to Las Palmas last time out, Valencia slumped to a 1-0 loss at Eibar with Pedro Leon scoring the rebound off his own missed penalty to earn the home side their first points.

Saturday’s other match saw Sociedad beat Basque neighbours Osasuna 2-0 with Juanmi firing the visitors in front on the stroke of half-time before Unai Garcia’s unfortunate own goal setted matters.
