La Liga Dominates UEFA’s Team of the Year

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were selected alongside Antoine Griezmann up front in the XI voted for by UEFA.com users.

However, there was no room for any of the Premier League’s star names as the team was dominated by La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The Spanish league boasted eight players in the team with Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Barcelona’s Gerard Pique the picks in defence.

Like the attack, the midfield was also made up of players playing in Spain – Real duo Toni Kroos and Luka Modric joined in the centre by Andres Iniesta.

With Gianluigi Buffon in goal and Leonardo Bonucci in defence, Italy and Juventus had two names while Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng was the only Bundesliga representative.

Despite boasting talent like Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba and Sergio Aguero, the Premier League’s top names appear to trail behind La Liga’s star performers in the popularity stakes.

Ramos came out on top with 488,000 votes and was named in 75 per cent of teams while Real team-mate Ronaldo was named in 69 per cent.

Lionel Messi was next, selected in 64 per cent of voters teams amassing 418,449 picks.

While 48 per cent of the 7.1 milliion votes were registered in Europe, a quarter came from Asia and nine per cent were logged from America.
