The Mauro Icardi contract situation is threatening to cast a shadow of Inter’s season. It has already impacted the clubs USA Tour with the captain missing games against PSG and Estudiantes with a “shoulder injury”. There have been reports that Icardi has been banned from talking to the press.
At the heart of the dispute is that Icardi wants more money and Wanda, his wife/agent, has been publicly putting pressure on Inter to redo his contract which he signed 12 months ago. Inter initially resisted her proposals for a new Deal, but that stance has chanced over the last week as Napoli have aggressively stepped up their efforts to sign the striker.
Wanda has listened to offers from Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Arsenal and Napoli this summer and they are all offering a lot more than the €3.2 million wages that the Inter skipper is currently on.
Arsenal are reported to have offered Icardi wages €7 million a season while Napoli are reported to have offered him a five year deal in the same neighborhood of €7 million per season. Napoli’s offer came with a €60 million bid that Inter rejected.
This is the first major crisis under the Suning leadership and they are under intense pressure to get it right. That means keeping the club’s top scorer and giving him a new contract that is more in line with his value in the market, and ties him down to the club longer.
According to various reports Inter President Erick Thohir met with Icardi at the club’s hotel alongside sporting director Piero Ausilio this week that the club will be offering him a new deal once the transfer window closes.
Reportedly the new contract would run until 2020, and would pay the 23-year-old a total salary worth €4 million, with €2.6m going to his wages and €1.4 linked to image rights. That would make him the highest paid player at the club.
Hopefully this is an opening offer from Inter as there is no way that Wanda accepts that. Especially with Napoli offering €3 million a season more than this Inter offer.
I don’t think that Inter have to exactly match the Arsenal or Napoli offers to Icardi, but I would suspect that it will take closer to €5 million a year to make this deal happen. And the big question then is can Inter afford that?
