Now that the 2018-19 fixtures are out, we are seeing stories like the five games that could define Inter’s season. Those might turn out to be the key games in determining how successful Inter is this season.
But I think a better test of Inter’s ambitions this season will be how Luciano Spalletti’s side does in December.
- Tuesday/Wednesday Nov 27/28: Champions League Matchday five
- Sunday Dec 2, 2018 AS Roma – Inter
- Sunday Dec 9, 2018 Juventus – Inter
- Tuesday/Wednesday Dec 11/12: Champions League Matchday six
- Sunday Dec 16, 2018 Inter – Udinese
- Saturday Dec 22, 2018 Chievo – Inter
- Wednesday Dec 26, 2018 Inter – Napoli
- Saturday Dec 29, 2018 Empoli FC – Inter
It’s a brutal run of games, where Inter play all three teams that finished above them in the league last season, including Roma and Juventus in back-to-back weekends, over a 24 day period.
Its a small relief for Inter in that Roma in Week 34 and Juventus in Week 35 are both home fixtures. But these two matches are bookended by two Champions League group stage games.
The Champions League matches are the wildcards in this schedule as we hope that Inter will still be in contention to progress to the knockout stages on Matchday five.
Squad rotation will be crucial here for Spalletti, who has has success leading Roma and Zenit into the Champions League knockout stages.
Inter have been active in the transfer window this season but is there enough depth to play Roma, Juve, Napoli and two Champions League matches within a four week window?
Inter’s public comments this preseason have been that this is the year of consolidating that Champions League position. We will know by the end of December if that is the sum of Inter’s ambitions this season, or whether we can dream of biggest prizes!
