For teams in Serie A, some are still finalizing who the new coaches are going to be. Only Juventus and Milan are left to officially announce their new managers, but it’s likely that both Thiago Motta and Paulo Fonseca will be confirmed by the end of the week. Napoli, Lazio and Fiorentina. Meanwhile, have all confirmed their new bosses.
Yet despite not formally announcing Motta, Juventus appear to be the ones making the most noise in the transfer market. As of writing,. Douglas Luiz could very well be the club’s first signing of the Summer, arriving from Aston Villa. The deal almost appeared out of nowhere, with links to the Brazilian non-existent until the last fortnight.
If the deal is concluded, Juve will hand over $21 million to Villa, plus midfielder Weston McKennie and winger Samuel Iling-Junior, bringing the total deal closer to $64m. Of course it’s difficult to tell at this stage, but it would appear Juve are getting the better end of the deal, as McKennie blew hot and cold last season, while Iling-Junior is being seen as a loss by some Juve fans, with many feeling the English winger was hampered by Max Allegri's rigid tactics.
Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny is also set to leave Turin, with the Pole close to agreeing terms with Saudi Arabia side Al-Nassr, with Cristiano Ronaldo supposedly playing a vital role in persuading the 34-year-old stopper to join him in the Middle Kingdom. Juve are closing in on the signing of Michele Di Gregorio from Monza for close to $21m, and Szczęsny was surplus to requirements, with Mattia Perin likely to continue to be the club’s number two.
In defence, Riccardo Calafiori is being heavily linked with a move and a reunification with Thiago Motta, the pair having worked together at Bologna last season. Calafiori, who is on duty with the Italian national team, would cost Juve in excess of $54m. However any possible deal won’t be negotiated until Italy return from Euro 2024 in Germany.
In midfield, the club are continually linked with a move for Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners, and should the signing of Luiz be completed, it wouldn’t be at the exclusion of signing Koopmeiners, who sparkled for La Dea last season. Juve could lose Adrien Rabiot this summer, with the club’s latest contract extension offer seemingly deemed not good enough for the Frenchman. Rabiot, who has now spent half a decade in Turin, seemingly wants $8m-per-season contract to remain, while the club reportedly won’t go any higher than $7m.
Despite ending last season on something of a high by winning the Coppa Italia, there are various players who’ll likely have played their last game for Juve. One of them is Federico Chiesa. Once labelled as the future cornerstone of the club, Motta is reportedly okay with the winger being sold in order to raise bunds to buy new players.
Chiesa’s form has suffered in the past two years, and he’s no longer the untouchable figure he once was. This title is now given to Kenan Yildiz, with the Turkish forward breaking into Juve’s XI last season and able to play more centrally, something Chiesa has always struggled with. Chiesa's contract is expiring next summer, and Juve could very likely decide to offload the player this summer, with Roma and Napoli both interested in the 26-year-old.
There are a lot of moving parts to Juve this summer, as Motta’s revolution prepares to go into fuill swing. For all the talk of Juve signing this player or that, no deals have been completed yet. However it’s only a matter of time. After years of reckless, questionable and directionless spending and signings, the club has now seemingly got its game together, with Cristiano Giuntoli now able to exert his full influence on the club.
