Yankees’ Luis Gil Rejects ‘star’ Label Despite Success: ‘That’s A Heavy Word’

In February, few could have predicted that Luis Gil would become the New York Yankees’ standout pitcher over the first 70 games of the 2024 season. Yet, that’s precisely what has happened.

Gil, a 26-year-old Dominican right-hander, boasts an impressive 9-1 record, a stellar 2.03 ERA, and a team-leading 96 strikeouts over 14 starts. His .142 batting average against (BAA) is the lowest in baseball, significantly ahead of the next best at .178.

Despite stellar performance, Luis Gil denies star status with Yankees

Stepping up as the Yankees’ interim ace in Gerrit Cole’s absence, Gil has emerged as one of the premier pitchers in the league. This unexpected success has transformed him into a sensation in New York. However, Gil remains humble, hesitating to label himself a “star.”

On Saturday, Gil granted an interview with the New York Post’s Steve Serby, expressing his modesty regarding his newfound fame. “When you say a star, man, that’s a heavy word. We have guys that are really, really, really talented. I don’t consider myself a star. I just try to do my job here and try to help this team as much as I can,” he remarked.

Gil did acknowledge the inevitable recognition that comes with playing for the Yankees. “At the same time, you’re playing for the Yankees, world known. So it’s inevitable, you walk around and people will recognize you from time to time because of how many fans the team has,” he added.

A significant part of Gil’s success can be attributed to the guidance of the injured ace and reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, Gerrit Cole. “Having Gerrit Cole around to be able to transfer some of his knowledge and give me some pointers that I can put to use I think has also been very beneficial to me,” Gil said.

When asked about other pitchers he admires, Gil didn’t hesitate to mention Cole. “I got to say Gerrit Cole. I’m lucky enough to have him around and to see him up close and learn from him,” he noted.

While Yankees fans eagerly await Cole’s return, Gil’s performance has been pivotal in maintaining the team’s competitive edge. His emergence as a top-tier pitcher is a testament to his talent, hard work, and the invaluable mentorship of seasoned players like Cole. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Gil to see if he can sustain his extraordinary performance and continue to shine in the Yankees’ rotation.
