Timea Babos (Hungary) Biography

This female Hungarian player is one to watch for the future. As a junior, she won 3 Grand Slam Girls Doubles Titles in one year with Sloane Stephens and a Bronze Medal in the Youth Olympics doubles playing with Belgian An-Sophie Mestach.

Birthdate:25-January-1988
Birthplace:Moscow, Russia
Height:5 ft 9 in (1.75 m)
Plays:Right-Handed
Turned Pro:2002

The titles were all won in 2010 when she was 16 going on 17. Babos and Stephens were the first doubles combination to win Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open in the same year.

At the 2010 Youth Olympics, she also reached the Quarter Finals of the singles but lost to Zheng Saisai and she also lost the Bronze Medal play-off so she ended up 4th.

Born in Hungary on 10th May 1993 she has been coached by her father Csaba Babos when she is in Hungary and also has helped by the former WTA Player Andrea Temesvari.

When she is training for the grass-court season she comes to stay with the same host family in Hertfordshire so she can train at the Gosling Tennis Academy in Welwyn Garden City with coach John Morris.

Timea Babos met him in South America in January 2009 and they were talking about her Tennis. He told her he thought she would be good on grass and told her she should come to England.

As she has no chance to practice on the grass in Hungary she came for 4 weeks then went to Asia, but she enjoyed it so much she returns whenever it suits her schedule, and depending on the surface she needs to prepare for.

When she is training for a tournament she has two fitness sessions a day plus two or three sessions with a psychologist.

Babos thinks it is not enough to just play tennis these days and both these sessions are important to her, she says you need to be physically and mentally strong as well as playing tennis well.

She finds the big difference between junior and senior level is concentration. There were times when she was playing at the junior level when she was not focused but she says if you do that at a senior level you lose easily and quickly.

Her nickname is Motty but she cannot explain why because it is Hungarian and she said other nationalities would not understand. She started studying English at 8-years-old and German even earlier and speaks both well, but she says traveling so much you pick up a lot.

What she found most difficult was combining studying for her A-Levels with playing tennis. She was home-schooled as she traveled so much but it was still hard.

2011 was her first full season after turning professional as a Senior and although she lost in the first round of the Medibank International in Sydney it was to Kim Clijsters and she managed to get three games off the 2011 Australian Open Champion.

She lost in the first round of the Australian Open to Ayumi Morita 4-6/4-6 but she was selected to play Federation Cup for Hungary which she found a great experience as she liked the team spirit.
