MARATHON – the race distance inspires many runners to push one their physical limits and endurance. The marathon race raises people together from all walks of life, and this surfeit of positivity can be harnessed to help others in need.

The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM), the premier distance running event in Malaysia, recognizes this potential and champions it through its Run For A Reason (RFAR) charity platform.

Every year between four and five charities are selected into the RFAR programme. Participating runners can choose to raise funds for any of them by purchasing a RFAR running entry and encouraging their friends and family to donate to their cause.

In this year’s KLSCM, Futuremakers by Standard Chartered, Dignity for Children Foundation (DCF), the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), Hospis Malaysia and Teach for Malaysia (TFM) have been selected since the 2020 edition. Unfortunately, since the race could not take place, these charities have not been able to raise their usual funds, as existing resources were also diverted to fight the pandemic.

Adrian Yeo, who signed up to raise funds for NCSM, is one such runner who has been waiting for two years to fulfil his tribute to his mother, who passed away from cancer recently.

“Running for NSCM is my way of paying tribute to my mom and all cancer patients, survivors and those who have passed away. My hashtag is always #beatcancer,” he added.

Adrian is just one of a multitude of runners who look to the marathon as not just an opportunity to test yourself physically, but also as an avenue to give back to society.

This year, 2171 runners will be raising funds for the various KLSCM charities and anyone who wants to do their bit by contributing to these causes can choose to donate to any of these runners here.
