Eliud Kipchoge improves marathon world record by 30 seconds – 2:01:09

Eliud Kipchoge smashed his own world record to win the BMW Berlin Marathon, at 2:01:09. He improved his timing by 30 seconds at the World Athletics Elite Platinum Label road race last Sunday (25th Sep).

Meanwhile in the women’s race, Ethiopian Tigist Assefa obliterated the course record by more than two minutes with 2:15:37. She is now ranked the third-fastest woman in history.

The double Olympic champion, Kipchoge put on the pressure right from the start. He clocked 5km in 14:14, 10km in 28:22 and 21km in 59:50, en route to a sub-two-hour marathon.

He continued to 25km in 1:11:08, 30km in 1:25:40, 35km in 1:40:10 and 40km in 1:54:53. By then, his closest rivals were trailing by 4 minutes. Fellow Kenyan Mark Korir finished in 2:05:58 followed by Ethiopian Tady Abate in 2:06:28 to complete the podium.
