Aimran and Kyra Fell In Love After First 30km Run Together

It is true that people fall in love at first sight! But if that first impression is reinforced immediately with seeing each other for the next 30km, then that love can only blossom.

For married couple Muhammad Aimran Abdul Jamil, 32, from Subang Jaya and Noor Zakira “Kyra” Zulrimi, 29, from Johor Bahru, that was their true love story. They got to know each other three years ago in a social event during Ramadhan when they ran their first 30km together.

Before they got to know each other, both Aimran and Kyra had already been actively Running since 2015.  Aimran was actively racing in Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) based races, while Kyra was active in the gym with her Les Mills RPM, Bodycombat and Bodypump workouts. Currently, the couple has progressed into training for triathlon.

ToughASIA: What inspired you to take up running?

Aimran: Back when I was studying, I saw this Viper Challenge advertisement and I was amazed! So I signed up the 20km viper challenge at the Sepang course and fell in love with running.

Kyra: My gym friend invited me to join a running event. It just so happened that I won a podium position and my passion for running grew.

ToughASIA: How does it feel to have a competitive spouse in the same sport?

Aimran: Most of the time it benefits us, motivating and encouraging each not to skip training. But at times, our easy run suddenly turns into a race.

ToughASIA: What keeps you both running together now, even when there are no races?

Kyra: Not only do we love running, but our goal is to maintain our fitness. We do run, cycle and do some strength training. Most importantly, we enjoy the sports that we are participating in. However, the intensity of our training has reduced as there are races at the moment.

ToughASIA: Who takes care of the training and racing laundry?

Aimran: Kyra. I help to fold the clothes.

ToughASIA: Who has the more expensive shoes? Do you buy each other shoes as gifts or rewards?

Kyra: Aimran! I ordered a custom-made a pair of Nike running shoes for him as one of the dowry items for our wedding.

ToughASIA: What is the most memorable race you have competed in together or when you have supported one another?

Kyra: IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi 2019 in Kedah. The plan was to register together but Aimran had to go away to Shanghai for 3 weeks for work. What was worst was his flight back home was the night before the race. So, he could not be there at flag off.

However, he landed and reached home at night and slept in the airport to wait for the flight in the morning of the race day. He landed in Langkawi and made it just in time before I started the running leg!

I was so excited to see him and started my run at pace 4. With Aimran’s endless support, I finished well and won a slot to the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in New Zealand 2020 which has since been postponed to 2022.
