WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Can we get a slow clap for the NHL’s schedule makers? Nothing like a back to back after returning from a road trip. Take the over on injuries suffered tonight, folks. Anyway, in another neat schedule quirk, it’s almost December and the Canucks are facing this divisional rival for the first time. There was a time this season where the Oilers looked like a genuine contender in the Jack Hughes sweepstakes. Amazing what firing a coach can do sometimes, right? The Oilers have been on a roll since Ken Hitchcock took over from Todd McLellan, going 9-2-2 since taking the job.

One of the reasons they’ve been better? They’re getting good goaltending right now. Mikko Koskinen has been steady in goal, especially at home, and really helped the Oilers right what appeared to be a sinking ship. If there’s any reason for hope from the Canucks viewpoint, it’s the Oilers road record. They’re 8-8-2 away from Rexall, so the 7-7-1 at home Canucks can maybe consider that a wash? I don’t know...

It was a strange game last night, and you have to feel for the Flyers after watching that. There’s a lot of good pieces there, but if you thought the Canucks needed a goalie? Holy crap, it’s insane how many goalies that team has chewed up and spit out. Also, If Dave Hakstol has a job Tuesday there’s something really wrong. That’s a rudderless team, and the new coach, when he arrives (coughQcough) will start the process of bringing them back to respectability.

Here’s some stuff from last night, and the drill is the same as yesterday: it’s early, I gotta work, we’ll sort it all out as the day goes on. The Athletties covers some great stuff, including the importance of Bo Horvat (this trade is as big as the one that brought Markus Naslund to the Canucks, fight me!), trade speculation and EP’s death stare... JPat’s 5 takeaways from last night’s win... Boeser’s healthy, and that means the Boeser/Pettersson/Leivo line is gonna start giving teams nightmares... Post-game from Sportsnet... And the Province... Ed Willes on Quinn Hughes... Post-game from our pals over at Broad Street Hockey...

GAME DAY BATTLE HYMN: Time to show some love for one of Canada’s truly underappreciated bands: The Smalls. Their unique brand of country-tinged thrash shouldn’t have worked, but it did, and back in the 90’s this band toured relentlessly, inspiring some furious circle pits in Kamloops and towns all across the country. Hell, they even had a riot at one of their shows back in my old home town (I will have to tell that story another time). Here’s a couple of my favorites from them: Payload and Nero Divla. Enjoy the game.
