Cincinnati Masters: Andy Murray beats Stan Wawrinka, hopes for day off

British tennis player Andy Murray said he hope he wouldn’t have to play on Tuesday after playing against Stan Wawrinka in the first-round match of the Cincinnati Masters.

The Scottish native was seen exhausted after playing in hot conditions, although he acknowledges that he still needs to keep his aggressive play to ensure his game works on the hard courts.

“I don’t know if we play tomorrow, I’m hoping there’s a day off. I’ll go and ask for one now if not!” Murray said. “The court is pretty lively when the weather is like this. Physically I feel tired.”

Both Murray and Wawrinka have played many difficult matches over the years. They each have won three grand slams throughout their careers. Unfortunately, they both have suffered from injuries after playing on the ATP Tour to compete at the highest level. On Monday, Murray played through cramps while attempting to secure his first victory of the 2022 US Open season.

“I had some issues with cramp during the match, the same as Washington, so that is something I need to get on top of,” he said.

Murray has a second-round game coming against fellow Brit Cameron Norrie. He said he hoped that he could resolve his cramp problem in order to play better.

“I started to feel it a little bit in the second and struggled at the beginning of the third,” Murray said.

“I tried to get as many electrolyte salts as possible and saw the physio a bit which helped. But I struggled with the cramps in Washington against [Mikael] Ymer and again today so I need to get on top of that.”

Despite the struggle, both Murray and Wawrinka put out an exceptional performance, ending with Murray winning 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, and 7-5.

Murray’s tribute to Wawrinka

Murray has shown himself to be highly referred to as he offered a tribute to Wawrinka after defeating him at the Cincinnati Masters. He paid his respect to Wawrinka during his on-court interview and hoped that the fans enjoyed their epic performance.

“I was hanging on in the third set,” the former World No.1 said. “I was struggling a bit. So was Stan. We’re not young anymore.”

Murray also said that he was somewhat accustomed to playing tennis with and after his injuries.

“I started playing when I was four, but probably started taking it seriously when I was 12, so it’s been a huge part of my adult life,” Murray said.

Preparation against Norrie

Current British No.1 Norrie will be Murray’s next opponent. Murray said that this match would determine his position in preparation for the US Open.

“Cam’s had a brilliant year or last 18 months,” he said. “He’s been playing top-level tennis, very very consistently.

“It will be a big test and a great match for me going into the US Open. He is very different to how Stan plays, being a lefty.”

In his previous match, Norrie showed both grit and quality while playing against Holger Rune, winning 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4 in the process.

“I had chances to close the matches in straight sets this week and get it done easier than usual and it didn’t go that way and I was able to let that go and respond,” Norrie said.

“In the third set, I moved really well and it’s nice to get over the line.”

By defeating Rune, he has reached his 10th ATP final and this was the second title of the season after his victory in Delray Beach. This year he already has won two titles and reached his first Grand Slam semi-final last month at Wimbledon.

In the first round at Roland Garros, Norrie took on French wildcard Manuel Guinard and won 7-5, 6-2, 6-0.
