Browns Involve Jacoby Brissett More, Preparing For Deshaun Watson’s Absence

With Deshaun Watson suspended and facing disciplinary issues, the Cleveland Browns have turned to Jacoby Brissett to fill in. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said that he has been analyzing the issue by giving Bisset the majority of the starting offense’s practice reps.

According to Stefanski, Brissett is ready to carry the weight on his shoulder, saying that the player is getting used to the intensity of the game thanks to the training session. Among all the quarterbacks the Browns have, Brissett is the priority.

“Yes, and that has been the plan really from the beginning is just to at some point let Jacoby get the majority of them, still work Deshaun, still work (QB) Josh Dobbs and still work (QB) Josh Rosen, but Jacoby will get the majority starting this block,” Stefanski said.

Browns have just finished their first preseason game with a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field on Friday. They still have another two preseason games on August 22 and 28 against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bears respectively.

Stefanski also pointed out Brissett has good leadership, talking and leading his teammates in the dressing room.

The 40-year-old coach is confident that Brissett would fulfill the expectation if Watson is not on the team.

“Jacoby has gotten a lot of reps to date,” he said. “I go back to the nine-week offseason program and the weeks we have been together, he has gotten a ton of reps with the ones and with the twos.

“He will keep on that same process and making sure he is running the show when he is in there. He does a nice job in the quarterback meeting room with those guys so I just think this is also the natural progression for him moving forward.”

Watson’s learning curve

On the other hand, Watson took part in the team’s preseason game against the Jaguars at EverBank Field. It was his first time returning to the field after 19 months.

Before the game, Watson issued an apology through an interview with the Browns broadcast team regarding the sexual harassment lawsuit by dozens of women in massage therapy sessions.

“I want to say that I am truly sorry to all of the women that I have impacted in this situation,” Watson said.

“The decisions that I made in my life that put me in this position, I would definitely like to have back, but I want to continue to move forward and grow and learn and show that I am a true person of character.”

Stefanski appreciated Watson’s apology, saying that he was expecting the quarterback to learn from the scandal.

He added that there was nothing wrong with Watson’s performance on the field as the Browns beat the Jaguars 24-13.

“Talked about it last night, I just think Deshaun has been very committed to being the best version of himself,” Stefanski said.

“That is off the field and that is on the field obviously when he is in this building, but more so I do think he wants to learn and grow as a person. That is important.”
