Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady out for personal reasons

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback Tom Brady has said that he will go on hiatus for an indefinite time for personal reasons. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said the 45-year-old would not feature in the first preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.

Bowles told reporters on Thursday that Brady would not return until after the second preseason game. He explained that the starting QB was dealing with “personal problems”, adding that the team supported his decision.

Bowles said that Brady insisted on joining the team in training camp. Brady told Bowles he wanted to bond with the squad, especially fellow quarterbacks. Brady participated in joint training with the Miami Dolphins at the AdventHealth Training Center in Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday, but he was not present on Thursday.

“We allotted this time because he wanted to get in and get chemistry with the guys and go through two weeks of training camp, knowing he wasn’t going to play the first two games,” he said.

Bowles said that he still expected Brady to play as starting QB in NFL Preseason Week 1 at Raymond James Stadium.

“Obviously, there is always going to be doubt,” Bowles said. “But I have a pretty high level of confidence.”

“He didn’t want to take away reps from Blaine [Gabbert] and Kyle [Trask], as well as ‘Griff’ [Ryan Griffin] going into these next two games, knowing it’s something he needs to handle.”

Discussing Brady on The Pat McAfee Show, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport predicted that Brady’s absence would extend through most of the preseason.

“No one is worried. He’s fine,” Rapoport said. “To my knowledge, it’s not a medical emergency for him or anyone close to him. I was told everyone is OK. The best description I got about this what that it’s important to find a work-life balance.”

Last season, Brady led the NFL with 485 pass completions, 719 pass attempts, 5,316 yards passed, and 43 passes that led to touchdowns.

Reactions from teammates, fans

Bucs linebacker Devin White said that the team was not worried about Brady’s absence impacting the team.

“He’s a grown man, more grown than a lot of us in the locker room,” White said. “He’s a human. At the end of the day, he’s got personal problems going on, but he’s been doing this so long, he doesn’t need to be here.”

White said that he wished Brady would return as soon as possible.

“When he comes back, he’ll never miss a beat,” White said. “More than football, we’re praying for whatever he’s got going on as a human being. We hope everybody else does too.”

Fans have also reacted to the news. A said on Twitter, “He could show up on Sunday Week 1 and be just fine” replied to the Tweet from NFL Network’s Adam Schefter. A fan also replied to Schefter’s and said that “Aka the goat not playing in meaningless games.”

“People think this has to do with Miami but I think something is wrong with Tom’s Family. Hopefully nothing,” another said.

When the NFL Preseason is over, the Buccaneers will face the Dallas Cowboys in their first regular-season game on September 11 in Arlington, Texas.
