There must be something in the water in western Arizona’s Lake Havasu.

That “something,” it turns out, it world Record redear sunfish!

In February 2014, an absolutely mammoth 5.8 pound redear was caught in the lake. Many believed this record would stand the test of time. And why would it not? Seriously, who catches a sunfish that weighs nearly six pounds?

Cue Thomas Farchione of Waterford, Wisconsin.

Keeping it nice and simple with a dropshot nightcrawler, Farchione produced what may be the most absolutely incredible sunfish you will ever see!

At 17 inches long with a girth of 20 inches, this would already be one of the largest sunfish ever caught. That said, this bruiser weighed an unbelievable 6.3 pounds! For those keeping score at home, that’s a full half pound heavier than the previous world record.

And, like its predecessor, it was also caught on Lake Havasu.

Farchione had the fish weighed on a certified scale at Bass Tackle Master in Lake Havasu City. Pending official certification, Farchione’s redear will take its rightful place as the new world record!
