The Press Box Sports Sal Romano gives solid outing in Cincinnati Reds 10-4 victory over Braves
Sal Romano pitched six solid innings for the Cincinnati Reds in their 10-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Romano went six innings, with one earned run, and five strikeouts in the win. The victory is Romano’s first of the season (1-2) and the fourth of the year for the Reds. Romano has now started in two of those victories.
The bats came to life for the Reds and were led by Scott Schebler. The outfielder blasted a two-run homer in the fifth to tie up the game 2-2. The Reds put up five runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth. Schebler led the way going 2-5 with 3 RBIs, and the home run. Jose Peraza also had a good day at the plate going 2-4, with an RBI. Billy Hamilton went 1-3, scored twice, and stole his fifth base of the season.
For Romano, this is a huge confidence booster. He’s struggled early this season but has shown at times that he can be good in the rotation. The solid outing drops his era from 5.75 to 4.78 on the season. It was also the second time that he’s gone six innings in 2018. The Reds need their rotation to go deeper in games to take the load off a struggling bullpen. Besides Raisel Iglesias who picked up the save, the Reds relievers haven’t been consistent.
Run support has been a major part of the Reds struggles early on. That puts a lot of pressure on pitchers to try to be perfect on the mound. A more productive offense should relax the pitchers and the Reds will see more positive outings. Joey Votto and Adam Duval are two key players in the offense that have started slowly this season. If the rotation keeps pitching the way that Sal Romano pitched Monday night and the offense can be productive, expect to see Cincinnati start showing signs of life. Hopefully, Monday’s win can be the catalyst to a better half of April for the Reds.
