Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has stated that Dutch central defender Matthijs De Ligt would be the first player that he would like to sign if he worked elsewhere.
Since Sven Mislintat left Arsenal earlier this season and the Gunners are currently on the lookout to recruit a new sporting director at the Club and former Dutch superstar Marc Overmars in probably the front-runner to fill up that void at North London.
Overmars has been keeping track of Ajax’s signings since 2012 and made huge profits for the club by selling young talents to European giants. Some of the players who left Ajax over the recent past and earned the club loads in transfer fee are Justin Kluivert, Frenkie De Jong and Davinson Sanchez.
However, the next player who is tipped to leave the Dutch giants is club captain Matthijs De Ligt, who recently made 100 appearances in the Eredivisie last week still just at the age of 19.
De Ligt is one of the top targets for top clubs and the possibility of the teenager leaving Ajax in the summer transfer window is very likely. Overmars himself has revealed that the central defender would be the first name to follow if he leaves the club.
MATTHIJS DE LIGT: THE STAR IN MAKING
In a recent interview with AS, Overmars was asked whether De Ligt would be the next top player to leave the Netherlands he said, “I think so. For me, De Ligt can play easily on any of the six best teams in the world right now. He has the power, the mentality, the heart. If I worked at another club, I would like to sign him immediately. We do not need to sell him, we do not need the money, but I know he will go to one of the big clubs [eventually].”
Arsenal should be keeping close tabs on trying to lure Overmars to the Emirates because he can convince De Ligt to join Arsenal as well.
