I fell in love the first time I laid eyes on an envelope clutch – their simplicity amazes me: a beautiful useable piece of fashion that’s modeled after an office product… OK! I don’t know which one came first, but I’m going with the paper envelope. An envelope clutch completely holds its own, all the while remaining elusive.
Materials:
- 12 x 12 piece of leather
- Standard invitation envelope
- Button stud appropriate for the thickness of your leather
- Craft knife
- Fabric scissors
- Sharpie
- Hole punch
Dismantle your envelope and use as a pattern to cut your leather. You will notice that one side of your envelope has the corner cut off; when you’re cutting the leather, cut as though the corner is there so that all four corners have a point.
Fold your leather so that you can see where the points overlap. Using the Sharpie, mark the spot the area where you want your button stud to go. With your hole punch, punch each mark.
Taking the two sides and bottom, align the holes and install the button stud.
With the craft knife, make a slit through the remaining hole to allow the button stud to catch easily (you don’t want it to be loose, but not so tight that you can’t easily secure it). Test that it closes the way you want and you’re ready to roll!
This size is perfect for a phone, cards (if you use it for cards, use a little card case for added safety), lip chap and a key. A little clutch like this is easy to slip into a backpack when you go to the zoo or park and if you’re going to dinner afterwards you can pull it out for a chic look!
