Kate Spade receives touching tribute at New York Fashion Week show

This New York Fashion Week marks the first season since the iconic fashion designer Kate Spade tragically passed away, leaving the industry in a state of mourning.

The American designer, who was known for her colourful handbags and accessories, was found dead in her New York home in June at the age of 55.

Spade was a household name in the industry and her eponymous label paid a heartwarming tribute to the late designer at its spring/summer 2019 show.

Taking place in the New York Public Library, guests arrived at their seats to discover small note cards, which read: “she left a little sparkle everywhere she went.”

It’s the first time the US fashion house has held a catwalk show at New York Fashion Week as opposed to a presentation.

In honour of the late designer, who was synonymous with her label’s bright and playful aesthetic, the collection was awash with pastel hues, 1970s florals and sparkling sequins.

A number of high-profile celebrity guests were photographed on the front row, showing their support for the brand and paying their respects.

Elizabeth Olsen, Kate Bosworth and Priyanka Chopra joined the likes of Suki Waterhouse, Gillian Jacobs and Julia Jones for the glitzy affair.

Speaking to Footwear News, Kate Spade’s new creative director Nicola Glass explained how she intends to modernise the brand while also staying true to its heritage.

“It was important that the brand became more modern and less retro, with a youthful spirit,” she said.

“We wanted to elevate not just the design but the construction and materials, whether it was
developing new leathers with a 3D printing technique or redesigning the hardware.

“The brand was known for its fun novelty, but sometimes it was too literal or obvious.

“It was about finding a way to tap into that sense of discovery.”

The spring/summer 2019 collection is the first to be designed by Glass, who took over from Deborah Lloyd as creative director in November 2017.
