Sarries channel their inner-Spurs to come from behind and win Champions Cup against Leinster

SARACENS did a Spurs as they came from behind to win a record third Champions Cup.

The lethal Londoners went on a 20-point frenzy with wrecking-ball No 8 Billy Vunipola scoring a superb solo try in this Anglo-Irish epic.

A Billy Vunipola try kick-started the Saracens comeback

Sensational Sarries have now won three out of the last four titles to be crowned king's of the northern hemisphere again as they heroically fought back from ten-down.

And don't bet against them doing the double, like in 2016, with the Premiership pot and another final at Twickenham next on their hit-list.

All but two of the players that started the game were Test match animals and both sides ripped in with the breathless ferocity of an international grudge match.

While points were precious fort Sarries, penalties sadly weren't.

Their red wall of defence were pinged for lurking offside and that gifted Ireland fly-half Johnny Sexton the first three-pointer of the day in front of the Gallowgate End.

Line-breaks were rare, too, but rampant Rob Kearney spotted a gap as Leinster started to dominate in attack.

Scotland winger Sean Maitland missed the tackle to bring the full-back down and the endless phase play finally paid off.

While the clock showed just a few minutes of intense pressure from Leinster, it seemed like eternity for Saracens who fought hard to defend their line before Maro Itoje was caught offside and shown a yellow card.

Prop Tadhg Furlong burrowed over in the next phase of the powerplay and Sexton's conversion gave them double figures until Owen Farrell eventually got the English on the board a minute before the break.

Then with the clock ticking dead Leinster scrum-half Luke McGrath kicked down Vunipola's throat and the England No8 won a penalty, which kick-started the dramatic comeback.

Farrell's booming kick found touch, the line-out was secured and Sarries went for the kill with Sean Maitland finishing from close range in the corner.

England skipper Farrell kicked the conversion to draw level and shock Stuart Lancaster's Dubliners as their ten-point lead was destroyed in a flash.

Another penalty from the boot of Farrell, Europe's top-scorer in this comp with 89 to his name, saw them take the lead and pull ahead as they started to control things at St James' Park.

Suffocating Leinster and denying the Irish a record fifth title Sarries to a man played out of their skins – from unsung hero Jackson Wray to star man Big Billy.

The bruiser, 26, dragged his boys to become the first English side to win the top trophy for a third time when he spotted a gap and, with THREE Leinster players trying to stop him, powered to the try line.

After being booed following his controversial backing for Israel Folau's homophobic tweets last month, Vunipola let his rugby do the talking in the Toon.

And what a statement it was from Mark McCall's men who are one of the best club side's this country have ever seen.

After his heroics, Vunipola on Radio 5 Live: "It's very humbling. I am truly grateful that we have a group pf players that love playing for each other.

"When we are down we try to look after each other. To do what we did showed the character of the team and depth of the squad.

"We wanted to try to stay in touch and nearly conceded at the start of the second half but we held them out and that's part of the culture of the lads.

"Today I want to make it about the team it's not about me and what I stand for. It's about the team.

"We've worked on that move for the try. I probably wouldn't have hurt my shoulder if I didn't go for it. It's a bit sore but I think I am being a bit soft."

Meanwhile, Saracens captain Brad Barritt said on BT Sport: "We've spoken the last few weeks about being a tough team. You have to soak up pressure and respond when you get the opportunity.

"The whole organisation has been working so hard for this and I'm really pleased we could pull it off today

"Leinster are an unbelievable team with very few weaknesses. We wanted to really throw the kitchen sink at them and not hold back.

"The amount of players that have come through our academy and the bonds between everyone in the team have got stronger and stronger."
