Dispatch from Afghanistan: ‘Our country has become a prison for women’. – JURIST

Law students and lawyers in Afghanistan are reporting with JURIST on the situation there after the Taliban takeover. Here, an Afghan law student expresses her disgust at the Taliban’s increasing restrictions on Women and, more recently, the harsh rules on wearing full hijabs in public. For privacy and security reasons, we are withholding the name of our correspondent. The text has only been slightly edited to respect the author’s voice. In this place, we burn. We have to fight for survival, for freedom and for human rights. We must be brave and combative so as not to be the object of violence and oppression. Women are victims of wrong ideologies and harsh culture. They have been beaten, stoned, burned and injured. Afghan women have always observed the Islamic hijab and the social culture of Islam. Hijab is not just that mandatory black uniform that the Taliban recently announced. They may try to take the color out of our dresses, but our brains are colorful enough to circulate the glitter. We will never give up. Every time we are repressed we will stand up and fight for our rights. In the years of greater equality before the Taliban, Afghan women became doctors, engineers, lawyers, politicians and artists. At that time women were making progress, taking advantage of opportunities for better education and a better life. But now the Taliban are destroying our basic rights. Our country has become a prison for women. But these days of not being able to get an education, not having free speech, and not being able to work will not last forever. Afghan women have shown their courage and will resist to regain their rights. These black days will pass. Taliban! The world is developing! People are flying into space and exploring the depths of the oceans, but under his rule Afghanistan is facing mass starvation. Soon the country will also face rising illiteracy. What is your plan to govern? This is what it means right now: eliminate women from society. killing military veterans arresting intellectuals and protesters closing schools. restrict means All these actions will lead to its destruction.
