Controversial Decision by VAR Hampers Arsenal’s Title Hopes | Three Crucial Lessons Learnt From the Arsenal-Brentford Game

We observed three things as Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford but Ivan Toney’s equaliser should not have stood. VAR error by team led by Lee Mason at the Emirates Stadium was not the first which has hampered the Gunners’ Premier League title charge this season.

It was another frustrating afternoon for the North London side as they dropped points at home against a resolute Brentford team. The performance was not good enough in the first half and Mikel Arteta’s men were lucky to go in still level.

The Premier League leaders took the lead after the hour-mark, thanks to Leandro Trossard’s second-half goal. However, Ivan Toney Equalised for the visitors with a close-range header and a VAR check cleared it despite two instances of offside.

1) VAR Has Room For Improvement

Lee Mason will not be in charge of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties in the upcoming Premier League matches following his error that resulted in Arsenal dropping two points during their match against the Bees.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney equalised late on. Although VAR spent a considerable amount of time reviewing the goal, they did not identify that Christian Norgaard, who assisted Toney, was offside, as they were instead focused on Ethan Pinnock’s role in the build-up.

2)  Arteta’s In-Game Tactics Have Become Questionable

Arteta wants to dominate the games, but there are some teams that just allow you to dominate only to hurt you on the break. When you play against such teams, you need more runners than playmakers. Having Zinchenko and Xhaka in midfield helps the Gunners dominate games. Both players would rather have the ball at their feet than make runs in behind as they look to dictate play.

In games against teams like Everton and Brentford who attack on the counter, it looks difficult for Arsenal to come home with three points. To succeed against this kind of team, you need intelligent movements in and around the box. Whatever the manager does, he needs to find a solution to this quickly as many teams are going to set up this way against the Gunners now.

3) Gabriel Jesus Needs To Return To The Lineup From Injury

Despite Nketiah’s strong performances individually, Arsenal struggle to play out of the back as a team without Gabriel Jesus, who is very good at link up play. The 23-year-old performs better against the big teams as they don’t really sit deep, but the Brazilian makes everyone better against any opposition.

The Brazilian forward plays as a lone striker in Mikel Arteta’s setup. The Spaniard could involve Jesus in the play-making process instead of using him as an out-and-out striker or a goal-poacher. Arsenal needs to get their dynamism and unpredictability back; the return of  Jesus guarantees that assuming it is not too late.

Mikel Arteta criticised the officials and argued that the late equaliser for Brentford against Arsenal should not have been allowed due to an offside. After losing to Everton in their previous game, Arsenal was hoping for a quick recovery, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home against the Bees. The team was not performing well and had difficulty scoring until Leandro Trossard broke the deadlock with just over 20 minutes left to play.

Arteta expressed his disappointment at the match’s outcome, saying that scoring against the visitors is no easy feat, and that the team needs to learn from the set-piece goals they conceded. Despite the setback against the Bees, the Gunners will be motivated to keep their momentum going with the City game being a title-decider.

While the result extends the lead over the Cityzens to six points, they could still be overtaken next week if Guardiola’s men wins both their games. Brentford, on the other hand, remains unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League games and Thomas Frank believes they deserved a better result than a draw against Arsenal, but the team won’t be celebrating.
