Manchester United Preparing Bid for £35m Rated Eredivisie Forward | An Alternative to Antony

As per reports in London, Premier League giants Manchester United are considering a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo. The Red Devils are keen on signing an attacker before the summer transfer window shuts close and have shortlisted the PSV forward as a potential target.

Having already lost Edinson Cavani, who left after his contract expired this summer, Cristiano Ronaldo also informed the club of his desire to leave. And with Anthony Martial currently injured, the attacking department at Old Trafford is lacking quality and depth.

The Red Devils recently signed Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia to bolster the backline along with midfielder Christian Eriksen this summer. However, the new United manager Erik ten Hag has not been able to bolster his frontline yet.

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have “internally” discussed a potential deal for Cody Gakpo and are preparing to submit an offer for the winger in the ongoing transfer window. Ten Hag, who shares the same agency as the 23-year-old, wants to sign the forward to boost the side’s attack.

Meanwhile, Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the Dutch international is willing and would “love” to move to the Premier League this summer. However, talks are still being held internally and no concrete news is there about where the PSV forward would end up in this transfer window.

Earlier, the Red Devils submitted an opening bid for Bologna striker Marko Arnautovic, but withdrew their interest in the Austrian forward after the Serie A club turned down the offer. The club also missed out on RB Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko, who is set to join RB Leipzig next summer.

Meanwhile, United were very keen on bringing Ajax forward Antony to Old Trafford this summer. However, the Red Devils now seem unlikely to land the young Ajax star, despite the Brazilian international being a top priority on Ten Hag’s transfer wishlist.

The 23-year-old is a PSV Eindhoven academy graduate. He scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists in a total of 46 appearances (stats via Transfermarkt) across all competitions last season. The Dutchman is currently posing to be a top alternative for Antony as the Eredivisie club are seemingly keen on retaining their remaining star players for the 2022-23 campaign.

Despite the potential rumours surrounding Cody Gakpo, the winger expressed his views to ESPN (via Manchester Evening News) about the Manchester United transfer links:

“We must first focus on and try to make it to the Champions League. I don’t think I have said anywhere that I am leaving, so there is definitely a chance that I will stay. We’ll see how it goes.”

The Red Devils have had a very poor start to the new season, with two consecutive losses. Erik ten Hag saw his team lose 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion at home in the first week. The Manchester club were bullied 4-0 by Brentford last week.

The back-to-back losses have set the alarm bells ringing at Old Trafford. Thus, it is critical for the Dutch manager to plan out a recruitment strategy that would strengthen the attack and help the club make some progress during the 2022/23 season.
