Signings Mikel Arteta Should Make in the Summer to Bolster his Squad for Next Season

Arsenal have a busy summer ahead as they will try to bring in new signings to bolster the squad for Arteta to take the team to the next level. The Gunners are enjoying one of their best seasons in recent years. They currently sit 4th in the Premier League table.

A win in the North London Derby this weekend would have taken the Gunners seven points clear of Tottenham and confirmed Champions League football for them next season. But, an unfortunate 3-0 loss prolonged their wait for a top-four finish, for the first time since 2017.

To compete with the best teams in Europe, Arsenal will need to add a few more players to their roster. American duo Matt Turner and Auston Trusty are set to join the team for next season. William Saliba too is expected to return from loan. Here are some other signings Arsenal should look to make in the summer for the coming season:

A. Centre-Forward:

Arsenal will be left with virtually no options to lead their attack next season. The Gunners are set to lose Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah on free transfers. Reports suggest that the Gunners are looking to bring in two strikers in the transfer window. Here are the players the Gunners could look to sign:

1. Alexander Isak:

Arsenal were heavily linked with Isak in the winter transfer window. The Swedish forward has endured an underwhelming 2021-22 season, with just 5 goals and 2 assists in the league. Furthermore, his reported release clause of £75million could be reduced if the Basque side miss out on European football. If Arsenal do sign the 22-year-old, he could be a perfect fit into Arteta’s system.

2. Gabriel Jesus:

Another player who has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates. Jesus can play down the centre but is most effective from a wide position. The Brazilian could help Arteta solve the 9-crisis while providing depth in the wide positions too. Reports suggest that Manchester City value Jesus at €60 million.

B. Central Midfielder:

Mohamed Elneny is a free agent, although the Gunners have initiated new contract talks. Furthermore, Albert Sambi Lokonga has still shown signs of his inexperience, while Thomas Partey’s injury problems persist. Arsenal need a profile that could work well in a double pivot or a three-man midfield, like Ruben Neves, Arthur Melo and Douglas Luiz. Here are two more players the Gunners could look to push for:

1. Marcel Sabitzer:

The versatile Austrian has struggled for minutes with Bayern Munich this season. Reports suggest that the Bavarian giants would be willing to sell Sabitzer for just £12 million. The former Leipzig man can play all over the midfield, as a left-back or on the wings.

2. Florian Grillitsch:

Sabitzer’s Austrian teammate Grillitsch will be available on a free transfer this summer. Grillitsch is a solid defensive midfielder with strong aerial prowess. The prospect of signing the 26-year-old on a free transfer and minimal wages must be tantalizing for Edu, as it allows the Gunners to allocate more funds in strengthening other positions.

C. Back-Up Full-Backs:

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney are undoubtedly Arteta’s preferred first-choice full-backs. However, the duo have been plagued with injury issues this season, forcing the Spaniard to call upon deputies Cedric and Tavares more often. The Portuguese duo are solid bench options but have struggled against bigger opponents. Arsenal could look to clear some space in the squad and recruit back-ups in both full-back positions.

1. Javi Galan (Left-Back):

Galan swapped a relegated Huesca for Celta Vigo at the beginning of the season. The Spaniard has been one of the best full-backs in the Spanish league and has attracted the interest of Barcelona and Sevilla. Galan has an affordable release clause of just €18 million. The 27-year-old is a talented dribbler and hard worker off-possession. Galan could provide excellent cover for Tierney, if not direct competition for a place in the XI.

2. Malo Gusto(Right-Back):

18-year-old Gusto has had an impressive season with Lyon. The Frenchman has 5 assists in 35 games across competitions. Valued at €25 million, Gusto is also being tracked by Juventus and Atletico Madrid. Arsenal could look to involve players in a swap deal to reduce the asking price further.
