Arsenal Receive Transfer Offer From Saudi Club Al-Nassr for 32-Year-Old Striker

According to reports, Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr FC have submitted a loan bid for out-of-favour Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, which also includes an obligation to buy in the summer.

This season has been anything but good for the Gabonese striker, football as well as health-wise. He was diagnosed with COVID at the start of the season and later, was sidelined again by Mikel Arteta due to some tensions between the two. This month, he went off with Gabon to play in the AFCON but before he could play a single game, he was sent back to the club.

Arsenal are in clear-out mode right now. First, Maitland-Niles joined Roma on loan, then Balogun went on loan to Middlesbrough. Kolasinac terminated his contract with the club and joined Marseille, while the last deal involved Pablo Mari joining Udinese on loan.

According to Goal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be next on the list of exits, with Al-Nassr FC interested in signing him this month. The report mentioned that the Saudi Arabian giants have shown concrete interest and have made an offer to sign the 32-year-old striker.

Al-Nassr want to sign Aubameyang on loan until the end of the season with an obligation to buy for around £6.7 million in the summer. Edu and the Arsenal board are yet to respond to this offer. Although they want to get him off their wage bill, taking home a salary of £250,000-a-week, the Arsenal chiefs are contemplating whether it would be wise to let the striker leave at such a crucial point in the season.

His departure could prove decisive in Arsenal’s pursuit of Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic, for whom they have tabled a bid of £50m. It is believed that the Serbian wants a £300,000-per-week salary at his next destination.

Sending Aubameyang to Al-Nassr will certainly clear out the wage bill for the Serbian striker and lighten the burden on Arsenal. However, the North London club will fall further short on striking options if they fail to sign Vlahovic, or any striker for that matter, in January.

The Gabon international has been off-colour this season. He started strongly after returning from COVID, scoring a hat-trick against West Bromwich in a League Cup game, but then his form dropped massively. In 14 Premier League games so far, he has found the net only four times. After his disciplinary issues at the club, he was stripped of the captaincy last month.

Aubameyang was dropped from Gabon’s first game against Comoros after testing positive for COVID on 6 January, when he arrived in Cameroon for AFCON. He missed the next match against Ghana after scans revealed “heart lesions”. He returned to London without playing a single game in the tournament.

Manager Arteta said Gabon did not mention Aubameyang’s condition clearly and the club will carry out further tests to ascertain his issues. He said before the second leg of the League Cup semi-final:

“He’s in London and now he’s going through some examinations because we haven’t had any clarity from the Gabon national team about the reasons why he came back,”

“Obviously it’s our obligation to make sure that medically the player is safe, is in good condition and that there are not any issues relating to that.”

“And to try to avoid any suggestion that that is the case because so far historically everything that we have done with the player, he has never had that issue.”

“So let’s go step by step, let’s do the right examinations and make sure the player’s health is in the best possible condition. Then we will see what happens.”
