The oceans and seas as we know it are filled with some of the weirdest creatures in the world–from the most menacing lookers to finned creatures that poop sand. There are a lot of water-dwellers that are sure to impress you with their sheer level of weirdness. So, without further ado, here are six of the Weirdest Fish in the world and what makes them worth mentioning:
We’ll start this list with the seahorse which have the genus name Hippocampus. Coined from the Greek words ‘Hippos’ which means ‘Horse,’ and ‘Campus’ which means ‘sea-monster.’
If their name is anything to go by, we are looking at horse sea-monsters. But unlike their land brothers who bear horses, these sea creatures are very small.
As small as the seahorses are, they have several aces up their bony structures. These sea-monsters hunt stealthily. Stalking prey with their tubular snouts while their eyes wander about.
As if that’s not enough weirdness for a small sea-monster, male seahorses give live birth thanks to the ventral pouch on the front-end of the tail. This ‘brood pouch’ is used for safekeeping the eggs deposited by the female during mating. Male seahorses are the ones who give birth.
