It will encourage Solskjaer that United’s senior players certainly seem to trust James as they regularly sought him out on the left flank throughout the first half and with good reason as Spurs found it difficult to contain him.

Towards the end of the campaign, Spurs were generally set up in a 4-4-2 diamond shape to compensate for the Harry Kane-shaped hole in their attack, with Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura dovetailing as two free-roaming forwards.

The Scot’s willingness to hold his position frees up space for Paul Pogba and he adds a bit of bite to United’s midfield too.
