The Calgary Flames have called a news conference for Monday at 11 a.m. at the Saddledome, where they are expected to introduce Bill Peters as their new head coach.

Peters was behind the bench for the Carolina Hurricanes for the past four seasons, posting a combined record of 137-138-53 but never earning a playoff invite.

The 51-year-old from Three Hills, Alberta, will replace Glen Gulutzan, who was fired by the Flames last week after an underachieving season.

Peters will serve as Team Canada’s head coach at the 2018 IIHF World Hockey Championship in Denmark.

There are no Flames on the roster, although Calgary’s superstar left-winger Johnny Gaudreau (U.S.), second-line centre Mikael Backlund (Sweden) and backup goaltender David Rittich (Czech Republic) are all expected to skate in the tournament.
