49ers notes: Secondary gets lit up and injuries mount in loss to Rams

The Latest: Trump speaks with Puerto Rico governor SANTA CLARA — A pair of red zone penalties called against the 49ers’ secondary on Thursday night highlighted the frustrations the unit had against Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams.

With the ball on the 49ers’ 17 with 55 seconds to go in the first half, safety Jimmie Ward was flagged for hitting a defenseless receiver as he made contact with the Rams’ Robert Woods, who seemed to duck right before impact.

Early in the third quarter, Rashard Robinson was called for pass interference on Sammy Watkins on a 3rd and 5 play for the Rams on the 49ers’ nine.

Defensive end Tank Carradine was knocked out with an ankle injury, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk didn’t return after he suffered a concussion as well.

SANTA CLARA — After Brian Hoyer’s first pass went for a ghastly interception Thursday night, Kyle Shanahan found his quarterback on the sideline for a quick pep talk.
