Saturday's matchup, prediction: Notre Dame at Michigan State

Last meeting: Gerald Holmes rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns to lead Michigan State to a 36-28 victory on Sept. 17, 2016, in South Bend, Ind.

The Irish trailed by 29 in the third quarter, then scored three consecutive touchdowns but couldn't complete the comeback.

The Notre Dame quarterback completed just 11 of 24 passes (45.8 percent) for 96 yards last week against Boston College.

Notre Dame had big rushing performances in wins against Temple (422 yards) and Boston College (515).

LaMond Pope's pick: Notre Dame hasn't won many close games the last couple of years, but the defense makes a late stop and the Irish hold on.
