Todd Bowles: Jets' Christian Hackenberg has 'things to build off' from ...

EAST RUTHERFORD -- Jets coach Todd Bowles came away from Saturday's Preseason opener against the Titans cautiously hopeful about his team's most consequential player -- quarterback Christian Hackenberg .

After a solid but not spectacular performance from Hackenberg, Bowles said the second-year pro did some encouraging things, as he competes with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty for the starting job.

Though Hackenberg threw mostly short, quick passes, he was decisive with his reads and didn't hold the ball too long.

And yes, his evening ended late in the third quarter with a lost fumble, via a botched exchange with backup center Jonotthan Harrison.

New offensive coordinator John Morton's West Coast system -- which looked conservative Saturday -- aims to eradicate that issue.
