Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was desperate to join Chelsea this summer according to Blues’ head of goalkeeping Christophe Lollichon.
The goalie’s future at the Parc Des Princes was scrutinized in the summer after the arrival of Gianluigi Buffon.
Chelsea were also facing challenges in their goalkeeping department at the time as Thibaut Courtois was intent on leaving to join Real Madrid.
However, the Blues replaced the towering Belgian with the 23-year-old Kepa Arrizabalaga in a goalkeeper record transfer fee from Athletic Bilbao.
Meanwhile, Lollichon who has been at Chelsea since 2007 stated that he would have been happy to work alongside fellow Frenchman Areola.

In a chat with Le Figaro, Lollichon said: “We spoke a lot in the summer”
“He wanted to come here, but the final decision was not my responsibility. It would have been a pleasure to work with him.”
Areola was in goal for France on Thursday in the game against Germany ahead of the injured Hugo Lloris. He impressed by making vital saves to keep France in the game.
Lollichon noted that the debut was well overdue, insisting that the PSG shot-stopper was a much better option than Hugo Lloris.
He added: “I didn’t have to wait until Thursday to discover Areola. For me, he is already the best French goalkeeper today.
“We eulogise about Lloris too much, Areola is above him.”
