Federer Wins Big Against Nadal in Indian Wells

Pre-quarter finals match of Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open 2017 between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal finished in just over an hour time. It looked like Federer was in a hurry he finished it off in style without giving any chance to Nadal. He won this match in straight sets with match score 6-2, 6-3.

Right from the start of the first set Roger Federer looked unmatchable and was in sublime form. He started applying pressure right from the start on Rafael Nadal. In the very first game of the first set, he broke into a 1-0 lead. He broke Nadal one more time in this set to win this set 6-2 in just 34 minutes. The way he took set point on Nadal serve needs a special mention. Nadal did a great serve on Federer backhand and he just smashed it rather killed it with his backhand down the line stroke. It was an absolute winner shot, Nadal didn’t even move an inch in reaction to this shot.

In the second set, it looked like Rafael Nadal is trying to put forward some resistance but Roger Federer was unstoppable. He maintained constant pressure on Nadal and after some initial resistance broke down to a 3-1 lead. Nadal though kept on fighting and took match all the way till 5-3. At this stage, Nadal was serving to save game, set and match but with some bit of luck, Federer moved into 15-40 lead with two match points. On Nadal service Federer again brought is backhand into play and capitalized on first match point itself. Unfortunately for Nadal, nothing was going his way today and Federer was just too good today.

With this victory, Federer has improved his head to head winning scores against Nadal. Still, by far, Nadal leads the head to contest between them by 24-13 but from last three encounters, Federer was able to better Nadal. Whatever the scoreline stands contest between Rafa and Roger is a treat to watch in modern tennis and will go down in history books as one of the most fiercely fought, celebrated and crowd engaging rivalries.

As reported by BNP Paribas Open in post match talks Nadal mentioned that

“In Australia, it was a very close match,”. “I had good chances to win. Today, not. Today he played better than me. I didn’t play my best match, and he played well. These kind of matches, when you’re not playing your match, are impossible to win”.

“When Roger has the advantage, his serve is so good, he has a lot of confidence with his serve, he’s able to play much more relaxed. The worst thing in that match for me was from the beginning I was at a disadvantage [with him] breaking the first game of the match and then breaking the second game of the second set. That’s so difficult to play against Roger this way.” he further added.

The way Roger stormed into quarter-finals it looks like Roger will not settle for anything less than a championship trophy in this tournament.

Earlier in another match Steve Kyrgios staged one of the biggest upset of this tournament by defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Kyrgios defeated three-time defending champion Djokovic 6-4 7-6 (7-3) to power into the last eight of the BNP Paribas Open 2017 Masters event.
