The Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 is about to start, and one of the players to watch is Ravichandran Ashwin. Since the 2013 series, he has had great success playing Australia at home.

The fact that Australia has discovered a net spinner that nearly resembles Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling technique demonstrates the severe threat he represents.

Many of the Australian batsmen have been outplayed by India’s star spinner in previous games. In light of that, let’s take a closer look at three athletes that have a chance to beat him this time for the Border Gavaskar Cup.

#1 Usman Khawaja:

Usman Khawaja did have trouble against Ravichandran Ashwin in the matches the two of them participated in in 2018. However, it’s a pretty small amount of data to base your judgements on. Ashwin has twice removed him, and he has only scored 10 runs off of his bowling.

When Australia competed in Asia last year, Khawaja was one of their most reliable hitters and had a good game against spin. He hasn’t yet played a Test match in India, so it’s unclear how he’ll perform under these circumstances.

But given that Khawaja is a left-hander playing against Ashwin on Indian soil, you’d think it was just an issue of time before the Indian off-spinner defeated him.

#2 Travis Head:

Travis Head, one of Australia’s top players a year ago, has been reassuring for his side with his performance in Test and ODI cricket. Head’s first Test series in India will be this one. Although he has good statistics in Australia, he has struggled on the subcontinent. He scored less than 100 runs in five games in Pakistan and Sri Lanka last year.

The southpaw played Ravichandran Ashwin in Australia before, collecting 31 runs while being out once. To put it simply, when the two parties finally meet on Indian rails, it will be a very different ballgame.

Travis Head’s ability to compete against India’s bowlers will be put to the test. And Australia’s performance will be greatly influenced by his performance. However, Head’s absence of success outside of Australia and Ashwin’s domination against left-handers. Particularly at home, ominously portend bad news for the Australian batter.

#3 David Warner:

Since 2012, David Warner has met Ravichandran Ashwin several times, and he doesn’t like going up against the off-spinner. Warner has lost to Ashwin ten times, scoring only 182 runs on average, a poor performance for the stocky southpaw.

Warner has been incredibly streaky and is now going through a tough time across all of their formats. So they are not in the ideal shape going into this series.

His performance in India hasn’t been great; he’s only scored three fifty in eight games, averaging 24.25. He may be considered one of Ashwin’s regular victims already, and by the conclusion of the season, that number may increase.
