Lewis Hamilton endured a challenging season in 2016, when he lost the title to his colleague Nico Rosberg, during his successful period with Mercedes.

The Briton had a rough start to the year due to a number of mechanical issues, which allowed Rosberg to take the championship lead with 43 points.

Lewis Hamilton had fought his way back into the championship race by the end of the summer. He was optimistic that he would win the race, increase his advantage, and quickly clinch his fourth world championship when leading the 2016 F1 Malaysian GP. He had to leave the race, though, after experiencing yet another engine issue.

Lewis Hamilton claimed at press conferences following the competition that “someone or something doesn’t want me to win this year.”

The F1 paddock and Mercedes were rocked by this specific comment since it was taken as Lewis Hamilton blaming someone on the team for purposefully ruining his season and giving Rosberg the victory.

After a few hours, though, he made it clear that he wasn’t criticizing anyone on the team or in the paddock; instead, Lewis Hamilton was only alluding to a “higher power.”

“A superior being,” he declared. “Right now, it seems as though a higher being or man is making a small contribution.”

This comment from the Briton surprised the paddock and Mercedes even more because the title fight between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton is regarded as one of the most fierce in F1 history. Hamilton thanked his squad for sticking with him on Instagram following the race weekend.

Lewis Hamilton has disclosed a chat he had with Toto Wolff, the Austrian team manager, that had a lasting impression on him. Toto found it really moving when he recounted what it’s like to be the only person of colour at a meeting or paddock.

The seven-time world champion stated to GPFans: “He brings up a topic that, according to him, impacted him quite hard. Have you ever imagined being the only person of colour when entering the paddock for a race weekend? I asked. I hadn’t even thought about that, he says. And I said, “Well, that’s how it is for someone like me when I’m in the room,” to which they replied.”

Lewis Hamilton has always felt out of place since he is one of the very few persons of colour in the F1 paddock. It’s probable that the British driver still feels this way despite being one of the grid’s oldest and most successful racers.
